A Real Tough Guy

Sam recently had his first haircut. He went with Ongwai and Bongwai and Sam had to play it tough while he was there. He was real nervous but kept up a front until mom came in.
Then the crying started. I think there's a good and bad side to his suppression of fear when he's around anyone that isn't mommy. Good that he can control his emotions when he has to and bad that he can't yet articulate his emotions to make them understandable to everyone else.

The above was true a month ago but now at the time of this posting he is letting people know when he's pissed off!

Sam's First Birthday Party

Thank you to all who attended. Much thanks for all the wonderful gifts that were sent. College tuition here we come. For those who couldn't make it your presence was sorely missed. It was a whole lot of fun and there's still two more cakes to eat through! Please stop by and have some! Seriously.

Sam's first birthday party was a success.
Weeks before the event a friend kept asking me, "Are you stressed out yet?"
I should have been but thanks to two sharp and selfless sets of grandparents things went smoothly all the way through. We're very blessed here in Kona to know so many terrific people. I think everyone had a lot of fun.
Baron Sekiya showed up just as group portraits were being taken and he took a video clip of the action.

We'll be posting some of our own hopefully. Ngoc's (or Lily's -depending on what isle you're on) sister must have taken a few and hopefully gets them to us to use.

Sam just had his flu and measles and four other shots of unpleasantness stuck in him the day before and had a fever that day. But he did great considering and was a very patient sport going through several rounds of photos. Everyone that's in one gets one so I'll be seeing you.

Additional thanks to Aunty Harriet for the lollipop cookies. They looked cute and tasted awesome!

Sammy Stories

Recently, Lily took Sam to spend the day at her mom's house while everyone worked at the store. Usually this is something that our mom and dad do but we're so short-handed that When they got there Sam expected bong-wai (grandma) and ong-wai (grandpa) to be there. When he realized that it was just him and mommy Sam took charge as the "host" of the house and walked over to the air conditioner and patted it while giving his baby grunt indicator - "hmmmmgggh".
Then he walked over to the lamp and pointed at it.
"hmmmmgghh"
Next he walked over to the video shelf where he's not allowed to tear apart and said, "hong" (ha-omh), which means no.
Mom helped him out with the next part, "What do we put on the floor Sammy?"
She took out the mat for him to play on that goes over the hard tile.
Sam then walked over and showed mommy exactly where to put it.

One of Sam's first foods was french bread and it wasn't long before he would be carrying around an end of a loaf and munch on it to his content. The cool thing is that he liked to share it with daddy and would offer it out to me to take bites. One day though I bit into his finger. The crust requires pinching with the inscisors to take clean bites and that's exactly how my teeth got into his baby finger tip. It hurt him bad.
A few days ago he was eating french bread again (he's been hooked on taro sweet bread lately) and I asked him to share it with me. He was happy to and stretched his arm out to feed me the bread but as my teeth came down he pulled back just an itty bit - the same way I do when I don't want him taking too big a bite of something. This made me very proud of him

I'm just walking around

Tonight Sammy officially started walking. Mommy made gnocci with a marinara sauce (excellent!) and turkey sausage. Sam stood up on his own and took four slow and steady steps to where mom was sitting and declared, "Mum, Mum". Which means food, hungry, give me some food 'cuz I'm hungry. Well done Sam. And he loved eating the gnocci too.
Before this he would position himself by the couch so that he could walk over to the bed and fall on it with his momentum and on one occasion he walked over to grandma at her house but we suspect it was the same legs keeping up with the forward motion until he could grab something type deal.
We're all very proud. Yet dissappointed as the video camera broke. Yucky!

Late last night mommy and daddy were working in the office while little Sammy slept. We heard a bump and got up to see what it was. Lo and behold, there's Samuel crawling into the light; head cocked and eyebrows raised. He had woken up on his own and crawled out of bed to go see what mom and dad were doing.
We all went back out into the living room and played way past everybody's bedtime.

Now that the grandparents have got their computer back and running I'll be trying to keep this updated daily.
Samuel's leaping through stages. He started playing with the jeweler's kids, Ethan (1 yr.) and Jeremy (8yr.), and he's loving it. Jeremy taught them to say 'Tita' and 'bita' today. So Sammy's got a couple of new words; whatever they mean.
Sam's treats dad differently when at work from when at home. He'll usually almost ignore me while I'm working and if I kiss him and he tries to climb onto me but I can't take him he won't fuss. Today we were busy and I couldn't see him at all until I walked passed him and he cried. heh. Gave him a hold and a hug and he was cool. He'll be waiting to play when I get home.
Wow! So much to catch up on.
Yesterday he stood up on his own from a squat hands free while on the Bale table. He was so proud of himself. He usually needs some applause to get the stoked looked on his face but he knew he made a big step and was just glowing. After that, all he wanted to do was walk around (holding onto the wall or holding someones hand) until we went home.
I'm glad I'm caught up with the Sam happenings. We'll see if we can keep up.

Hello dear family and friends!

Sorry we haven't posted anything lately, but the restaurant business has been keeping us very busy. Max has become an adept cook and is excellent at cooking. All the while he is professionally tossing food into the air and it magically lands onto the plates, ready to go out eager customers. He's tired, but he likes the challenges that cooking brings. As for me, Sam has been keeping me very busy as well as he's in that magical stage between crawling and walking. So I am basically the walking safety net of arms for him, as he topples about. He tries to stand on his own, but is still shocked when he sees himself standing alone. Then, he'll reach for mommy or daddy to hold onto. He's almost walking, but we're not in any rush for him to do that. Imagine all the chasing we'll do when he does walk! So crawling suits us just fine!

About a month ago, it was tough for Sam as his front top and bottom teeth were coming out. In the picture posted here, you can see 3 teeth visible! I took a picture of him while I was feeding him breakfast. I felt really lucky that this picture came out. His last top front tooth is still taking its time coming out, so he's grumpy every once in a while, but feels better after munching on the french rolls that Max bakes every morning.

Sam has been learning a lot lately and we cannot believe that he'll be 0ne year old in a month. So far, he knows how to wave "bye-bye", can clap his hands, and has just started to dance (in his own way, of course) any time music comes on. Also, he's learning to climb up and down the bed and couch. Since he loves climbing, he'll do it everyday. Max and I even joked that we'll build a wall for him to climb, but nah.

Thank you everyone for the cards, gifts, help, and love that you've bestowed upon our Samuel.
As we are restrained by our locatation and time limitations we have not been able to let a lot of our family greet our boy.
This weblog is to keep everyone abreast with how Sam is growing.
We will try to take some time off and get out there ourselves but until then please enjoy the photos
